NCERT Announces Phased Rollout of New NEP-Aligned Textbooks for 2026-27 Session

New Delhi | March 21, 2026 — In a move to align school education with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has officially confirmed a phased rollout plan for its new suite of textbooks.

Starting from the upcoming 2026–27 academic session, significant changes will be implemented across various grades, though the Council has opted for a cautious approach regarding board-exam-critical years.

Class 9 to Get a Fresh Curriculum

The most notable change for the upcoming session is the introduction of entirely new textbooks for Class 9. These books are designed to align with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, focusing on:

  • Multidisciplinary Learning: Encouraging students to see connections between subjects like Science, Arts, and Humanities.

  • Skill Integration: Incorporating contemporary vocational skills and digital literacy.

  • Reduced Content Load: Shifting the focus from rote memorization to "learning how to learn."

No Changes for Classes 10 and 11 This Year

To prevent "board-year disruptions" and ensure students have a stable environment for high-stakes examinations, NCERT has confirmed that Classes 10 and 11 will continue with the existing textbooks for one more year.

"Transitioning middle and secondary school curriculum is a delicate process," a senior NCERT official stated. "By maintaining the status quo for Classes 10 and 11, we are ensuring that students preparing for their first board exams or entering the senior secondary phase are not overwhelmed by sudden changes in syllabus structure."

Class 3 and 6 Implementation Continues

Following the initial rollout for Classes 3 and 6 in previous cycles, the new books for these grades are now fully integrated into the school system. The 2026-27 session will see further refinement based on feedback from educators and parents.

What This Means for Schools and Parents

  • Procurement: Schools are advised to strictly follow the new list for Class 9 but can continue using existing stock or standard editions for Classes 10 and 11.

  • Teacher Training: NCERT, in collaboration with CBSE and state boards, is expected to launch a massive training module for teachers to handle the revamped Class 9 pedagogy.

  • Availability: The new Class 9 books are expected to hit the markets and be available on the official NCERT portal by early April to coincide with the start of the new session.
