Parliamentary Panel Meets Today to Review NEET-UG Re-Exam & Map NTA Overhaul

NEW DELHI — The parliamentary oversight on national entrance examinations intensifies today, July 1, 2026, as the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth, and Sports convenes a high-profile meeting. The central agenda focuses on analyzing the outcomes of the recently conducted NEET-UG re-examination and reviewing a comprehensive roadmap for institutional reforms within the National Testing Agency (NTA).

This marks the first meeting of the committee under its newly appointed chairperson, Congress MP Mukul Wasnik, who succeeded Digvijaya Singh following the latter's retirement from the Rajya Sabha on June 21.

Crucial Briefings on NTA Restructuring

Top brass from the education sector have been summoned to brief the lawmakers. National Testing Agency Director General Abhishek Singh is expected to present detailed insights and key takeaways from the June 21 NEET-UG re-examination, which was organized after the cancellation of the initial May 3 test due to widespread allegations of paper leaks. Higher Education Secretary Dr. Vineet Joshi will also present status reports regarding the ongoing transition of entrance evaluations.

A major highlight of the session is a briefing by former ISRO Chairman Dr. K. Radhakrishnan. Dr. Radhakrishnan, who heads the high-powered steering committee constituted by the Center to monitor NTA operations, will present a dedicated roadmap titled "Reforms to Strengthen the National Testing Agency." The panel will scrutinize these recommendations to prevent future infrastructural vulnerabilities and ensure complete sanctity in national-level competitive testing.

Double Agenda: AI's Impact on Higher Education

Beyond the immediate investigation into examination security, the standing committee will dedicate its afternoon session to an entirely different structural issue: the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the Indian education system and student employability.

The committee has invited a notable panel of technology and education experts to depose, including:

  • Professor Arun C. Mehta, former head of the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA).

  • Professor T. G. Sitharam, former AICTE Chairman and former Director of IIT Guwahati.

  • Representatives from the Delhi School of Artificial Intelligence and tech startups like Sarvam AI.

Lawmakers aim to chart out actionable policies that integrate AI into higher education curriculums while realigning student skillsets to match a rapidly changing, AI-driven global job market.
