NEET-UG 2026: NTA Chief Summoned by Parliament; Strict SOPs Unveiled for June 21 Retest

New Delhi: The fallout from the cancelled May 3 National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) continues to intensify. As the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) uncovers an interstate "guess paper" network spanning Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Haryana, the crisis has reached the highest levels of government scrutiny.

With over 22 lakh medical aspirants preparing for the newly scheduled June 21 re-examination, both legislative bodies and the Ministry of Education have stepped in to overhaul the exam’s security infrastructure.

Parliament Demands Accountability

In a major political and administrative development, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education has officially summoned the Director General of the National Testing Agency (NTA), Abhishek Singh, alongside the Union Higher Education Secretary.

The committee is set to grill top officials regarding:

  • Chain of Command Failures: How a leaked Chemistry and Biology question set—disguised as a 410-question "guess paper"—was successfully leaked from a printing press and circulated via WhatsApp and Telegram 45 hours before the exam.

  • Policy Lapses: Why structural vulnerabilities persisted despite previous oversight recommendations from the high-level Dr. K. Radhakrishnan Committee.

Mission "Leak-Proof": New Security Protocols for June 21

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has announced a "Zero Error, Zero Tolerance" policy for the upcoming re-test. The government is rapidly enforcing a strict new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to restore student trust:

  • Enhanced Digital Tracking: Monitored, GPS-tracked transportation with police escorts for all confidential examination materials.

  • Centre Overhauls: Strict auditing of private colleges and schools serving as test centres, with mandatory signal jammers and real-time CCTV feeds routed directly to a central command room.

  • Extra Time Provided: Recognizing the psychological toll on aspirants, the NTA will grant an additional 15 minutes during the re-exam, making the total duration 195 minutes (3 hours & 15 minutes).

Major Structural Shift: Minister Pradhan also confirmed that the traditional pen-and-paper OMR format is being permanently retired for this scale of testing. Starting in 2027, NEET-UG will completely transition into a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format.

Important Checklist & Relief for Aspirants

1. Free Travel Announced

To ease the financial and logistical burden on families forced to travel a second time, the state government of Punjab has announced that aspirants can travel free of charge on all state Roadways buses. Students simply need to present their registered NEET-UG 2026 admit card as their ticket.

2. Fee Refund Portal Open

The NTA has formally launched its online fee refund portal today. Because candidates are not required to pay any additional fees for the June 21 retest, the original processing fees from the cancelled May 3 test are being returned.

  • Action Required: All registered candidates must log into the official NTA portal to securely update and verify their bank account details for direct bank transfer (DBT) processing.
