NMC Extends Application Deadline for New PG Courses and Seat Increases for AY 2026-27

NEW DELHI – The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced a significant extension for the submission of online applications for the upcoming academic year 2026-27. Medical institutions now have until April 20, 2026, to apply for starting new postgraduate (PG) medical courses, establishing standalone PG institutes, and increasing seat capacity in existing broad and super-specialty programs.

The revised schedule, issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), shifts the original deadline from March 31, 2026. This extension is primarily designed to give colleges additional time to align their infrastructure and faculty requirements with the recently amended Post Graduate Medical Minimum Standard Requirements (PGMSR-2023).

Key Highlights of the Extension

  • Revised Deadline: Applications must be submitted via the NMC portal by April 20, 2026 (11:59 PM).

  • Scope: Includes Broad Speciality (BS) and Super Speciality (SS) courses, as well as the establishment of new standalone PG medical institutions.

  • Compliance: Institutions must demonstrate strict adherence to the PGMSR-2023 regulations, which were updated as recently as March 12, 2026.

Infrastructure and Quality Control

The NMC has emphasized that the assessment process for these applications will be more stringent. Under the updated 2023 norms, colleges must ensure:

  • Bed Occupancy: A mandatory minimum of 80% bed occupancy throughout the year.

  • Faculty-Student Ratio: Adherence to revised staffing patterns to maintain education quality.

  • Specialized Units: At least 15% of total beds in departments imparting PG training must be dedicated ICU or HDU beds.

Mandatory Online Submission

The Commission has clarified that only online applications accompanied by the requisite fee will be accepted. Offline submissions or direct bank transfers (RTGS/NEFT) without going through the generated portal link will lead to the rejection of the application.

This move is seen as a strategic step to increase the pool of specialist doctors in India while ensuring that new and expanding programs do not compromise on clinical and academic standards.
