AICTE Declares 2025-26 as "Year of AI": A Massive Push to Future-Proof 40 Million Students

NEW DELHI, March 18, 2026 – In a move that signals a paradigm shift for technical education in India, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has officially designated the 2025-26 academic session as the "Year of Artificial Intelligence." This ambitious initiative aims to integrate AI across all technical disciplines, impacting over 14,000 institutions and equipping nearly 40 million students with industry-ready AI competencies.

The declaration, which aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, marks the transition from AI as a standalone "computer science" subject to a universal, interdisciplinary tool for every engineer and management professional in the country.

The Vision: "AI for All"

Speaking at a recent national conclave, AICTE Chairman Prof. T.G. Sitharam emphasized that AI literacy is no longer optional. "We are moving toward a 'lateral expansion' of AI. Whether a student is in Mechanical, Civil, Textile, or Management studies, they must know how to leverage AI tools for data analysis, simulation, and ethical decision-making," he stated.

Core Pillars of the Initiative

To ensure the success of this massive rollout, AICTE has outlined a multi-pronged strategy:

  1. Contextual Curriculum Integration: An expert panel, chaired by Persistent Systems MD Anand Deshpande, has mapped out how AI will be embedded into subject-specific curricula for BBA, BCA, and all engineering branches by the 2026-27 session.

  2. Global Strategic Partnerships: AICTE has signed landmark MoUs with global AI leaders:

    • Perplexity AI: Providing digital support and search capabilities to 40 million students.

    • Microsoft & Adobe: Focusing on "job readiness" through specialized certification modules and internships.

    • ChatGPT (OpenAI): Offering Pro accounts to rural and government school learners to bridge the digital divide.

  3. The "AI Affirmation Pledge": Every AICTE-approved institution is now required to formally adopt a pledge to use AI ethically and for "societal benefit," prominently displaying this commitment on their campuses.

  4. Faculty Development (ATAL Academy): Recognizing that teachers are the catalysts for this change, AICTE is launching intensive, hybrid Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs) to train educators in AI pedagogy.

Innovation & Fellowships

The initiative isn't just about classroom learning; it’s about "productization."

  • AI Productization Fellowship: Selected student teams will receive a fellowship of ₹40,000 per month for up to two years to turn their college AI projects into commercial startups.

  • AI Impact Summit: India is set to host a global AI Impact Summit in February 2026, positioning the country as a "Vishwa Guru" (Global Leader) in responsible AI.

A Roadmap to "Viksit Bharat 2047"

Experts believe this move will dramatically increase the employability of Indian graduates. By 2027, India expects a demand for over 1.25 million AI professionals, and AICTE’s "Year of AI" is the primary engine to meet this requirement.
