Centre Approves 10,023 New Medical Seats in Government Colleges for 2025–26 to 2028–29

The Union Government approved the addition of 10,023 new medical seats in government medical colleges on 24 September 2025 when the Union Cabinet cleared the proposal during its meeting.

New Delhi:
In a significant boost to India’s medical education infrastructure, the Union Government has approved the creation of 10,023 new medical seats in government medical colleges across the country for the period 2025–26 to 2028–29.

The approval is part of the Centre’s ongoing efforts to expand access to medical education and address the persistent shortage of doctors in the public healthcare system. The new seats will be introduced in a phased manner over four academic years, allowing states and institutions to gradually scale up infrastructure, faculty, and clinical facilities.

According to official sources, the expansion will primarily benefit government medical colleges, where demand for seats continues to far exceed supply due to comparatively lower fees and higher clinical exposure. The move is expected to ease pressure on aspirants and improve the overall doctor-to-population ratio in the country.

The decision aligns with the government’s broader healthcare strategy, which includes strengthening tertiary healthcare institutions, improving medical education quality, and ensuring adequate availability of trained healthcare professionals, especially in underserved and rural areas.

Officials noted that the increase in medical seats is also aimed at reducing dependence on private medical colleges and overseas education, making medical education more accessible and affordable for students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

While the Centre has approved the overall number of seats, details regarding state-wise allocation, course-wise distribution (MBBS and postgraduate programmes), and timelines for implementation are expected to be released separately by the concerned authorities.

The expansion follows a steady rise in medical seats over the past decade, reflecting the government’s focus on building long-term capacity in the healthcare sector. Education and health experts have welcomed the move, stating that sustained investment in medical education is essential to meet India’s growing healthcare needs.
