GATE 2026 – Key Highlights

Conducting Body

  • IIT Guwahati will organize GATE 2026.

  • Conducted with IISc Bangalore + all IITs, under the National Coordination Board (NCB), Ministry of Education.

Exam Mode & Score Validity

  • Conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode.

  • Score validity: 3 years from the date of result announcement.


New in GATE 2026

  • Total Papers: 30

  • New Addition: Energy Science (XE-I) under the Engineering Sciences (XE) category.


Paper Selection

  • Candidates may appear in 1 or 2 papers.

  • Combinations must be chosen from the officially approved list.

  • If a combination is canceled due to scheduling, second-paper fee will be refunded.


Question Paper Structure

  • Total Marks: 100

  • Total Questions: 65

    • General Aptitude (GA): 10 questions → 15 marks (compulsory)

    • Subject Questions: 55 questions → 85 marks

  • Questions test:

    • Recall

    • Comprehension

    • Application

    • Analysis

    • Synthesis


Types of Questions

Only objective-type questions:

  1. MCQs – Multiple Choice

  2. MSQs – Multiple Select

  3. NATs – Numerical Answer Type

  • Candidates use an on-screen virtual calculator.


Marking Scheme

  • 1-mark and 2-mark questions

Negative Marking (only for MCQs):

  • 1-mark MCQ: –1/3 for incorrect

  • 2-mark MCQ: –2/3 for incorrect

No Negative Marking for:

  • MSQs

  • NATs

  • No partial marking


Session & Centre Allocation

  • Popular papers like CE and CS may have multiple sessions.

  • Each candidate gets only one session.

  • Candidates with two papers may get different centers within the same city.


Choosing the Right Paper

  • Candidates must choose papers themselves—usually aligned with their degree.

  • Flexible combinations allowed depending on:

    • Higher education goals

    • PSU/job requirements

A valid GATE score allows:

  • Admission to Master’s and Direct PhD programs in MoE-supported institutions (with possible stipends).
