Delhi Schools to Educate Students on Processed Foods and Healthy Eating

The Delhi government has mandated that schools teach students about the health impacts of processed foods as part of a broader national campaign to encourage healthier eating habits and fight diet-related diseases.

Key Highlights:

  • Schools under the Directorate of Education (DoE) must follow NCERT and Ministry of Education guidelines on nutrition literacy and submit activity reports by September 20.

  • The curriculum will cover:

    • Scientific aspects of food processing

    • Health risks of high-fat and high-sugar foods

    • Food adulteration, pesticides, and fertilizers

  • Field visits and “bagless days” will be used for hands-on learning experiences.

  • The CBSE is already implementing initiatives like "Sugar Boards" in schools.

  • The Ministry sees this move as a way to promote interest in food technology and nutrition careers.

  • This aligns with PM Narendra Modi's call (June Mann Ki Baat) to reduce oil and junk food consumption.

Purpose:

To create long-term, nationwide awareness around healthy eating, reduce obesity, prevent non-communicable diseases, and enhance food and nutritional security in India.
